Types of Coffee in the world
1. Arabica Coffee
Arabica coffee is a type of coffee that is quite well known and has many varieties. Arabica coffee is a traditional coffee whose taste is considered the most delicious by coffee connoisseurs.
Arabica coffee beans have the characteristics of a smaller bean size than robusta coffee beans, in addition, the caffeine content is lower, the taste and aroma are more delicious. This type of Arabica coffee has several well-known varieties, namely:
• Colombian coffee (Colombian coffee). One of these varieties of arabica coffee was first introduced in Colombia in the early 1800s. When fried right away, Colombian coffee has a strong taste and aroma. Colombia is the second largest coffee producer in the world after Brazil. About 12 percent of the world’s coffee is produced in this country.
• Colombian Milds. These varieties include coffee from Colombia, Kenya, and Tanzania. All of them are types of arabica coffee that have been washed.
• Guatemala Huehuetenango. This type of coffee is grown at an altitude of 5000 feet in northern Guatemala.
• Ethiopian Yirgacheffe. This Arabica coffee variety comes from the area in the city of Yirga Cheffe in the province of Sidamo (Oromia) in Ethiopia.
• Hawaiian Kona coffee. Hawaiian Kona coffee is grown in the foothills of the Hualalai Mountains in the Kona district of Hawaii. Coffee was first introduced in Hawaii by Chief Boki, Governor of Oahu, in 1825.
• Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee comes from the Blue Mountains of Jamaica. This coffee has a high price because of its popularity.
• Arabica coffee varieties also come from Indonesia, namely Java coffee (Java coffee). This Javanese coffee comes from the island of Java. This coffee is so famous that the name Java became the identity name for coffee.
• Arabica coffee varieties hereinafter named kenyan. This coffee is famous for its acidity and taste.
2. Robusta Coffee
Robusta coffee has a slightly rougher texture on the tongue, and tastes sweeter like chocolate. This type of Robusta coffee can grow and live in areas with an altitude of 400-700 meters above sea level with a temperature of 21-24°C.
The coffee beans are not easily damaged by pests. Therefore, Robusta coffee production per hectare is more and with lower production costs.
Robusta coffee is more often produced as instant coffee because of its high caffeine content and is suitable for consumption when you need a quick energy shot.
There are several well-known varieties of robusta coffee, namely civet coffee from Indonesia and natural coffee from the Philippines
3. Liberica Coffee
Liberica coffee comes from Liberia, West Africa. Liberica coffee can grow about 9 meters from the ground. This type of coffee has larger leaves, flowers, branches, fruit and trees compared to Arabica and Robusta.
Liberica coffee is somewhat susceptible to Hemileia vastratix HV disease or leaf rust disease.
Having relatively low fruit quality, liberica coffee is able to bear fruit throughout the year and can grow well in the lowlands.
Liberica coffee has several characteristics, namely its size is larger than Arabica coffee and robusta coffee, bears fruit throughout the year, relatively low fruit quality, uneven fruit size, and grows well in the lowlands.
Liberica coffee varieties that have been imported to Indonesia include Ardoniana and Durvei.
4. Excelsa Coffee
Excelsa coffee comes from west Africa, the first time this type of coffee was found near Lake Chad. This Ekselsa coffee is suitable for cultivation in wet lowland areas.
This type of coffee is very easy to cultivate because the Excelsa coffee is not susceptible to disease.
The type of excelsa coffee in Indonesia is mostly found in Tanjung Jabung Barat district (Jambi Province) because the topography of the land in the area is very supportive for this type of coffee.
